“Our first welcome to Lithuania came when we stepped off the plane in Vilnius, as we were hit with a gust of wind driving freezing rain into our faces. Despite this initial chilly ‘Labas’, two warm LCC faces were there to greet us after our long journey from Canada. Comforted by these friendly Lithuanians, we felt reassured in our decision to venture out, experience Lithuanian culture and study in this new environment.
Our apprehensions about learning to live with three roommates, considering our language and cultural differences, were soon put at ease within a few days. Students from many countries study at LCC, and their presence in the dorm adds to the multicultural experience. As a result, dorm life provides the opportunity to immerse oneself into unfamiliar traditions and new lifestyles. As our knowledge of Lithuania increases, we are able to observe the rich heritage and history that lies behind each individual and the generations preceding them.
As we met the LCC staff and students, other anxieties about our approaching semester quickly transformed into a desire to discover and learn more about this interesting country. The small class sizes create a relaxed environment, allowing students and instructors to engage in dialogue during lectures. We appreciate this aspect of our education at LCC as it encourages and recognizes individual learning habits. Outside the classroom, the professors make an effort to be involved in various social activities. The higher educational expectations of the college are enhanced by genuine, personal relationships between students and staff.
Our experience of LCC continues to reveal rewarding opportunities about the remarkable and striking nature of Lithuania. The small step we took in coming to this country has expanded into a life-changing journey. Our worldview has expanded as we discover more about ourselves amidst the different settings. Studying at LCC encourages diversity among students while emphasizing the communal aspect within a diligent academic schedule. These attributes, among others, exist to present the unique qualities of this college. “
The above essay was written by two Study Abroad Lithuania Alumni (Shannon Fehr and Janya Letkeman) who came to study at LCC in Spring 2001 (I know, I know, that seems like forever ago. So long ago, I wasn’t able to find photos of them). I (Emily, Study Abroad Director) found it today in a file of archives.
It struck me that LCC has changed so much in the years since these students studied with us, but the core of this program lives on to today. This essay could have been written in 2011 or 2021. Now we have students from 60 countries instead of 6, but the multi-cultural nature of LCC continues to be a transformational component of this university. Our campus and faculty/staff have also grown, but the deeply relational nature of LCC is the same. Small details might be different, but the legacy of Study Abroad Lithuania remains.
Here’s to the next season of deeply relational, intentionally multi-cultural life together. Cheers!
